Royal Canadian Air Force
Canadian Forces Snowbirds
431 Air Demonstration Squadron
15 Wing Moose Jaw
Age 35

She died in the crash of a Snowbirds CT-114 Tutor jet in Kamloops, British Columbia.
The pilot, Capt Richard MacDougall, also ejected and was transported to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

Capt Jenn Casey grew up in Halifax, Nova Scotia and attained a Bachelor of Arts at Dalhousie University, a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King's College, and a Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies from Royal Roads University.

Prior to joining the Canadian Armed Forces in August 2014 she spent several years working in broadcast radio as a reporter, anchor, and producer in Belleville, Ontario and Halifax.

Her first assignment as a Public Affairs Officer was at 8 Wing Trenton, the Royal Canadian Air Force's home of air mobility. She spent the 2018 season with the CF-18 Demo Team, travelling North America and the United Kingdom with the NORAD 60 jet. Capt Casey joined the Canadian Forces Snowbirds in November 2018.

Statement released by the Casey family:
"Captain Jennifer Casey, our beloved daughter lost her life on Sunday, May 17 in Kamloops, British Columbia while supporting an important mission that seemed to be designed for her. Operation INSPIRATION is a mission with one focus, making Canadians happy in a time of uncertainty and there was no better person in this world to carry out that mission than Jenn. Her beautiful smile and positively infectious personality could brighten anyone's day and she proudly served the mission as she flew across our great nation with a team that she adored, the Snowbirds.

Jennifer was more than a granddaughter, daughter, sister, and friend to many, she was a story teller, a role that she embraced with passion and skill. She was also a proud Nova Scotian that served as an advocate and ambassador for her province wherever she went. Her journey took her many places but her heart was always at home in Halifax.

It was in Halifax where Jenn studied Journalism at the University of Kings College and started her career in journalism with the Roger's network at News 95.7 where she developed her story telling skills, giving a voice to local causes and community groups that often didn't have one. Working with News 95.7 is where she built her enormous network of friends that have spent the last several days sharing kind words about her professionalism and beautiful character. Now they are telling her story.

Always one for an adventure, Jenn joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2014 as a Public Affairs Officer where she thrived personally and professionally. While serving her country, Jenn traveled around the world meeting new friends at every stop along the way. Using her experience and media connections, Jenn was great at telling the stories of the brave men and women that serve Canada at home and abroad. She was committed always to honing her skills and advancing her education in the field by completing a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies from Royal Roads University in B.C.

Many say that the military is much like a second family and Jenn welcomed these brothers and sisters with open arms and all her heart. There are many groups in her military family that are sharing in her loss. First and foremost, we are sharing this loss with the Public Affairs Branch, a group of communications professionals that introduced Jenn to her military family. We also share this loss with everyone in the Royal Canadian Air Force, a group of loving individuals that will always remember Jenn for the contributions that she made to the team.

And finally, we share her loss with the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, a team that she proudly served in a job she truly loved. Our hearts are with all of you at this time as we mourn the loss of Jenn and remember all of the memories we shared with her.

As she makes her way back to Nova Scotia to her final resting place, we ask those that knew and loved Jenn to cherish the memories that you have of her and continue to bask in the light that she shone on everyone's life. She is gone but will never be forgotten.

Captain Jennifer Casey………we salute you."

Obituary:
Jenn was fearless and determined with her work. She always knew what had to be done, and had a "stand back and watch me" attitude. She frequently led the charge when it came to public affairs in the Royal Canadian Air Force, something of which she was enormously proud. She was able to make everyone around her want to be better without trying to change them.

When not soaring with the Snowbirds, you could find her sampling selections from a local brewery or winery, curled up on the couch watching Star Wars with her partner Scott, or listening to her favourite band, The Tragically Hip.

Jenn had an artistic flair and was always eager to take on any new craft or creation.

Even though she loved fine food and drinks, she was also more than happy to stay in, order Domino's and enjoy a bottle of Costco wine while watching her beloved Habs. She took the time to enjoy every moment, kicking off her shoes to walk barefoot in the grass, or spending her extra money on a fancy cheese plate or dessert without a second thought.

Jenn loved animals, but especially dogs, and they always loved her back. Scott could compile an entire photo album of her petting random dogs they would encounter during their adventures, but she especially loved their two fur babies, Daenerys and Goose.

Always active, she loved to cycle and distance run. Not content with just any race, Jenn scaled the steep mountains of Cape Breton while participating in the Cabot Trail Relay, and was more than happy to rub Scott's nose in the fact she was more hardcore than he was.

Jenn held a Bachelor of Arts from Dalhousie University, a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King's College, Masters of Interdisciplinary Studies from Royal Roads University.

She came to the Canadian Armed Forces through the Public Affairs Branch, which introduced her to her brothers and sisters in the military. As a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force she played a valued and essential role. In 2018, Jenn worked with the CF-18 Demo Team as the team's Public Affairs Officer, Narrator and Coordinator. Jenn excelled in those roles so much she was handpicked to join 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, The Snowbirds, a job and a team that she adored.

Jenn is survived by her mother Rose Casey (Rob Tough), father Jean-Pierre Thimot (Veronica Thimot) siblings Luc and Cosette, her maternal grandparents Warren and Lorraine Casey, paternal grandmother Pat Vartanian, uncles Mike Casey, Marcel Thimot, Aunt Denise Thimot-Whitney and cousins Corey, Zak and Joe, as well as many other great aunts, uncles and cousins who will miss her dearly.

All are sharing in this heartbreaking loss with the love of Jenn's life and fellow Snowbird, Scott Boyd.

This hurt is also deeply felt by her "Highland Park Crew" whom she has known from grade school onward: Morgan Muise, Amy MacDonald, China O'Brien, Patricia Eden, and Catherine Murphy, as well as her entire former work-family at News 95.7 and dear friends Meghan Groff and Dan MacDonald.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather Al Thimot; step grandfather, Reuben Vartanian as well as many great aunts and uncles.

In lieu of flowers please support your local SPCA, plant a couple of trees in her honour, or donate to your local food bank.

If you are not in a position to do any of the above, simply kick back on your deck, crack open a local brew and turn the volume up on The Hip in her memory.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, funeral access will be limited, however a procession in Jenn's honour will take place from the airport along Highway 102 and throughout the North End, before heading to Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd., Halifax

Jenn's loved ones will be hosting a celebration of her life when it's safe for us to all hug each other.

Online condolences and tributes may be made by visiting the Halifax chapel at www.atlanticfuneralhomes.com

Homecoming ceremony at Stanfield Airport and a funeral procession through Halifax will be held on May 24, 2020 to honour Capt Casey.
